Also Umineko's manga is currently being translated, and you can find a full fan translation on the net that's finished (or at least almost finished, I don't personally know) but the books themselves are only about half translated so far. They left out key parts of the plot because they didn't know when they made the anime that "it'd be important later on" and so they couldn't finish it, so ultimately, unless you only wanna get half the story, don't do the anime.
Umineko, however, only has an anime for the first game, because they screwed up the first anime.
I reccomend any of these three, but the game got me creeped out during the first arc, Onikakushi the most out of any of them, if that helps away you in any way. Higurashi and Higurashi Kai both started as visual novels, both have anime adaptions, and the manga has fully been translated to English across all 25 books (yeah there's a lot).

You have a few options of how to watch these series. Now this reply is getting long so I'll make this next part short. That and both series also have a slew of other side games that are more comedy to add to the story but sometimes add a few more little pieces to the plot. Then after that, Umineko is a totally different series and you don't even have to watch or play Higurashi to play or watch Umineko (but id advise it since there's a lot of references and nods that seem like they tie in with Higurashi but are never confirmed) Umineko no Naku Koro Ni is the first of the two games that provides you with most of the body of the story (I don't wanna say question and answer like I did for Higurashi because it's WAY more complicated to understand than Higurashi.) while Umineko no Naku Koro Ni Chiru basically finishes off the body, and answers questions left unanswered so far. Then comes Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai, which has all the answers. It's hard to explain.) Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is the first of the series and it has all the questions in the Higurashi games. There's two full games the Higurashi games and the Umineko games, each having two games each (but are kinda counted as one game. Believe me it's good you asked because of you accidentally say, watch even part of the second season of Higurashi before the first like a lot of people did, you'll spoil the main culprit quickly, and that's no fun.
